The roustabout has to be used to hard physical work and be quite strong as heavy manual labour in difficult weather conditions is what this job has plenty of. Next comes the roughneck or floorhand, whose lot isn’t much easier although if he has a technical background and a couple of years experience as say, a navigator, a fitter or a welder, he’s much more likely to be the “preferred applicant” amongst others going for jobs.
