Piston Flowmeters

Do you know what piston flowmeters are?  I certainly didn’t, but they’re not hard to understand.  In these devices, often used for domestic water measurement, a piston revolves within a chamber of known volume and displaces a specific amount of water each time.  By means of a gear mechanism or a magnetic device, an odometer advances.  These mechanisms are very popular, particularly in the United Kingdom, for water measurement.  Honestly, I never really thought about flow meters at all until recently.  As with so many other things, I just assumed that people had some way of accomplishing the task of measuring.
