The history of women and neckties

Have you ever stopped to consider why it is that women don’t wear neckties? Why don’t you see women wearing pressed shirts all done up at the collar with a neat silk tie? The answer is quite easy: it’s because neckties went hand in hand with shirts, which were always considered the appropriate attire for a man. Western women had to wear dresses, and, where these dresses required a closing device like a necktie, they would opt for the more feminine scarf. Fashion keeps reinventing itself, and, while we do occasionally see women wearing silk ties, they are more likely to wear a scarf or do away with the necktie function altogether.
