Looking For Side Effects of Bisphosphonate Drugs

My mother has always been very healthy and has taken very good care of herself. She is 80 years old and is in very good shape. She has been seeing the same doctor for at least twenty years and has a great deal of trust in him. My mother told me last night that he had prescribed a well known osteoporosis treatment medication. He said she did not have the disease currently, but he wanted to prevent it. I think I read somewhere that the side effects of bisphosphonate drugs can be pretty severe. I am trying to find some information to either confirm or deny my suspicions.
