Pathology of Chilblains

February 13, 2010 on 9:51 am | By | In Health | Comments Off

Chilblains are an abnormal inflammatory reaction of the very small blood vessels. They usually affect the toes but can affect the fingers, nose and ears. They are not related to poor circulation as people with good and bad circulation can get chilblains. What is poor is how the circulation responds to warming up after the body part gets cold. Cold does not necessarily cause chilblains as is commonly believe. The cause of chilblain is that the warming up of the body part after it gets cold is too rapid. In some people, when it rapidly cold, the small blood vessels do not open as quickly to respond to the temperature change.
