Burglar in the garages

I am not sure if you have heard about this story but this just sounded crazy. Somewhere in the United States, a burglar filed a case against the homeowners and won. The homeowners had an out of town trip that lasted for days. The burglar attempted to get inside the house and found his way in using the small garage window. It turned out that he was trapped inside the garages. He had no way of escaping and he cannot even use the same window were he got in. To make the long story short, he was stuck there for days and had to eat using the food and drinks the homeowners kept in the garage. The burglar filed a case and won.
