Do a Complete Inspection Before Buying a House

Unknown to us, our house was built on top of an old coal mining shaft. If we had been from the area we probably would have realized it. But we were city people who relocated to a small country town, and our real estate agent did not make us aware of the fact. Over time, the ground started shifting and our walls developed cracks. The longer we lived in the house, the quicker the problem spread to other areas. We ended up having to get piers put under our house. When the job was finished we had to learn drywall patching techniques to fix the walls. Next time we buy a house, we will know to hire an engineer familiar with the area to complete an inspection.
