Goldfish in Ponds
February 18, 2010 on 8:02 am | By admin | In Reference | Comments OffSince goldfish are so hardy, they easily survive in outdoor ponds. The biggest problem for keeping goldfish in an outdoor pond is predators. Given the opportunity, rats, cats, racoons, and birds will snatch fish from the ponds. Outdoors, they can even survive below freezing temperatures as long as the water they are in is not allowed to freeze. In order to prevent the pond from freezing at 32 degrees farenheight, make sure it is at least 18 inches deep. Be sure to check on your outdoor goldfish frequently if it goes below freezing. In colder temperatures, your goldfish’s metabolism will slow and your fish will stop eating and become very inactive. This is normal. Create shade for your outdoor goldfish pond so the water doesn’t overheat. Many types of goldfish will be happy in an outdoor pond, including common, comet, and some fantails. If you live in a warmer climate where the temperature does not go below freezing, you have more types of goldfish to choose from, including veiltails and moors.
