What are rational opinions?

It is a known fact that while most people believe they have perfectly rational opinions, they really don’t. I’m not saying of course that you are an irrational person. What I am saying however is that you and most of humanity are capable of rationalizing irrational ideas because it comforts us. Take an example of a child from a deeply religious home who comes out as gay. His or her parents will likely rationalize that s/he is just going through a “phase.” It’s completely irrational, because the scientific evidence shows that people who are gay don’t change, but because of their deep religious values, the parents will try to pretend that their irrational opinion is perfectly rational. This site talks more about it and was really an eye opener.
